Google 'close' to picking new Motorola Mobility CEO, say the usual gang of sources

Google's first act with Motorola Mobility under its wing? Picking a new head for the company, apparently. According to some anonymous-type sources over at Bloomberg, Mountain View "is close" to picking its own SVP, former ad man Dennis Woodside, to succeed Sanjay Jha. Google, naturally is refusing to comment on the matter, which is still waiting the completion of the $12.5 billion acquisition.

Google Translate Now Speaks Esperanto in the Off Chance You Do Too [Video]

I always viewed Esperanto, a politically-neutral artificial language created in 1887, as akin to Latin or Sanskrit—a good idea at the time but no longer relevant to the modern world. Google obviously disagrees, having added Esperanto as the 64th supported language in Google Translate. More »

This week we have a nice little surprise for people looking to get their hands on the device that Phil calls "Android's most cutting-edge smartphone" -- none other than the Galaxy Nexus running on the Verizon 4G LTE network.

For this Wednesday and Thursday only, ShopAndroid.com in conjunction with Best Buy Mobile Solutions are bringing you a deal that is much too low to show, as it is the very lowest price that you'll find anywhere for this amazing smartphone.

How much of a deal?  You'll need to follow the link below to find out but we can tell you that if you're looking to start a new Verizon account with a 2 year contract you'll get it at up to $210 less than most options online and if you've been wanting to renew or upgrade your existing Verizon contract you'll still be looking at up to $100 less than other offers.

So if you've been lusting to get your hands on the amazing Galaxy Nexus, there probably hasn't been a better time to do so than right now.

Windows 8 wallpaper available to download, Jupiter and Twin UI spotted

windows 8 wallpaper
With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it's inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first "official" wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.

As you can see, it's got a similar feel to the good ol' Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of cerulean hues. Those of you who want to use the Windows 8 wallpaper on your current desktop can download it from our file dump.

A few other details have been revealed, too. According to ZDNet's source, the Windows 8 Jupiter libraries and Twin UI are starting to take shape -- though all that's been located thus far are "[various files] scattered throughout the OS" and the aptly-named twinui.dll.

SanDisk makes 128-gigabit flash chip, crams three bits per cell, takes afternoon off

SanDisk has developed a chip that earns it membership in the exclusive 128-gigabit club. Not content with simply matching the Micron / Intel effort, SanDisk and its partner Toshiba claim their new memory uses 19- rather than 20-nanometer cells in the production process. Shrinking the size is one thing, but SanDisk's new chips also use its X3 / three-bit technology. Most memory stores just two bits per cell; cramming in another means fewer cells, less silicon, more savings, cheaper memory, happier geeks. Analyst Jim Handy estimates that the price per gigabyte for the tri-bit breed of flash could be as low as 28 cents, compared to 35 for the Micron / Intel equivalent. Full details in the not-so-compact press release after the break.

Flash roadmap reveals new features, improved GPU support, lack of retirement plans

Flash
Flash for mobile may just be a spectator at its own wake at this point, but the desktop browser plug-in is still alive and (reasonably) well. In fact, Adobe has a host of plans for its flagship multimedia platform, as outlined in its 2012 roadmap. It all starts with 11.2, which should be landing sooner, rather than later, with support for right and left mouse clicks, multithreaded video decoding and improved GPU acceleration support. That will be followed by Cyril and Dolores, which will also expand the list of hardware-accelerated video cards, as well as improve overall performance and add a few welcome tweaks, like supporting keyboard input in full screen mode. Finally, in 2013, we'll see the debut of Flash Next -- a completely overhauled platform with major updates to the runtime core and ActionScript language that are designed to "meet the needs of developers over the next five to 10 years." Check out the source for full details but, be warned -- it's PDF only.
