DARPA Launches QR-Locating Game As Test Of Distributed Resource Gathering

the_road08Say the Mayans are right, and a meteor or some other catastrophe strikes the Earth sometime later this year. Assuming we're not all wiped out by the impact, emergency services worldwide are going to need to do some serious canvassing to assess damage, resources, and form a picture of the disaster. DARPA is running a little game, called CLIQRQuest, to look into how such a network of people might do such a task. But instead of asking people to snap pictures of reservoirs and hospitals, they're giving cash prizes for finding QR codes.

5 Ways Windows 8 Is Better Than iOS and Android

When Microsoft revealed the consumer preview of Windows 8 on Wednesday, it didn't just give the world a glimpse at a new OS -- it also showed us that it can be a leader in touch-based user interface design. Yes, Microsoft's new tablet UI isn't merely utilitarian. It's actually innovative, and even cool.

Why You Never Hear About World-Altering Inventions Created by Committee [Book Excerpt]

Modern corporate culture is in L-O-V-E, love with meetings (and any opportunity to engage in groupthink). But if you look back, history's real intellectual heavyweights weren't "team players." Intellectual giants like DaVinci, Einstein, and even Steve Wozniak, all developed their best works in near solitude. Quiet, by Susan Cain, examines why the world's best thinkers have usually been lone wolves. More »

Corporate Censorship Reborn: PayPal Bans Erotic Fiction

sexyboxThe independent book world has been beset on all sides recently. When the first e-publishers began to go to bat for independent and self-published authors, the writing world rejoiced. For too long the rapacious vanity press had taken their money and offered little in return. There is very little up-front investment for self-published authors except for a good story and a little HTML gumption and Amazon, PayPal, and Barnes & Noble (and Apple) made it easy to publish anything, any time. The market was the critic and the writer reveled in the spoils. Then things changed. Most recently Seth Godin bumped up against Apple's publishing guidelines when he added links to Amazon books that Apple does not sell inside his self-published e-book. There can be arguments on either side for Godin's position that the contents of his books are his and his alone to control. However, another brewing scandal points to outright censorship.

Polaroid's Pro smartphone series hands-on

It wasn't just Polaroid's tablets getting showing at MWC. The former photographic powerhouse has been readying a selection of Android-powered handsets that it's trying not to get confused with its HD camera seen at CES. Polaroid's Pro phone range seem to be pitched at the Alcatel side of the smartphone spectrum and ironically, given its heritage, the models on show brandished slightly lower-specced camera modules than the final versions. The Pro X11B's 1.3-megapixel camera will increase to two, while the 3-megapixel Pro A12 steps up to a 5-megapixel sensor. Unfortunately, the series' flagship 4.3-inch model displayed in Polaroid's smartphone brochure missed its flight to Barcelona, while, bizarrely, the working mid-range model was running HTC Sense. However, we were told that this software build was apparently there to demonstrate the (poor) screen technology. Build quality is similarly depressing and felt plasticky and out-of-date already. We were told that final models would arrive a little skinnier, but that's only the start of a whole raft of improvements needed here. Polaroid's distribution plans and pricing are still a little blurry, but until we hear more, you can check out our gallery for some close-up details.
