AT&T Adjusts Data-Throttling Policy in Response to Customer Complaints

In response to recent widespread criticism, AT&T announced Thursday that it will simplify elements of its throttling policy for unlimited-data-plan subscribers. All unlimited-data-plan users who exceed 3GB of data in a single month will now experience reduced speeds on AT&T's 3G network for the remainder of their billing cycles. 4G subscribers, meanwhile, can use up to 5GB of data in a billing period, after which data speeds will be throttled.

Bluetooth Is Not Just for Headsets

With cable-and-wire spaghetti proliferating in and around our homes and offices, threatening to consume our devices and us in the end, it may be time to take a look at Bluetooth wireless technology. Headsets protruding awkwardly from an ear is the typical Bluetooth image that comes to mind. However, there are other common wire-reducing applications, like file transfer and music distribution.

The Plaid Shirt: Rebellion, Grunge and a Touch Flamboyance [Video]

Plaid shirts will always represent for me Kurt Cobain, riot grrrls and grunge music. That's because I'm self-centered and lived my twenties in the '90s. But today when I see my husband putting on a plaid shirt, it inspires entirely different connotations. He couldn't be less grunge, but he is a certified geek. And it suits him perfectly. More »

Supposed iPad 3 parts assembled on video

A set of the supposed iPad 3 parts, like the ones that have been floating around for weeks, have again been put them together, and again offered them up for the internet's collective viewing pleasure. This time it's M.I.C Gadgets doing the inverse-teardown (build-up?) and... there's nothing much surprising. It looks like an iPad 2 that's the tiniest bit thicker and has a more pronounce tapering around the edges. They do, however, think 4G LTE is unlikely at this point.

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura
While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

Archos unveils 7-inch Child Pad slate: $129, Ice Cream Sandwich on board
We know you've already added the Fisher Price DVR to the list of gadgets that may withstand the physical trauma your kid's about to put it through. But how does an ICS-equipped, 7-inch slate with parental controls sound? Dubbed Child Pad, this sticky finger-friendly tab isn't just flaunting the fact it's tasting Android's freshest treat before most of you, it's doing so with a rather modest 1GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM. In theory, that should be enough to handle your little one's multitouch doings. Speaking of, Archos is pairing up the $129 machine with access to the AppLibs Kids App Store, which offers a portfolio of over 10,000 games, books and apps. Unfortunately, there's no word on what kind of ports or internal storage the Child Pad's packing. The good news is Archos isn't saying you need to be in first grade to use it, so feel free to grab one for yourself (or your kid) when it hits shelves at the end of the month.
