Video Game Guide a Sturdy Handbook for the Pragmatic Parent

Scott Steinberg is up to something important: He's trying to break down the walls raised by technology that have sprung up between children and their sometimes hapless parents. More importantly, he seems to trying to build a set of books and resources that will not only help parents understand the interaction and effects of technology on their children, but also protect yet let them embrace new tech.

San Francisco's 1958 "Cyclone" Bus Duster [Past Perfect]

The 1950's were perhaps the peak of American Culture. The Post-War economy was booming and a future of flying cars driven by robot housemaids was all but guaranteed. On the West Coast, one local transit authority even had a bus for cleaning other busses. More »

Comcast confirms full HBO Go access on Xbox 360 coming next week

Just as the rumors indicated, Comcast has revealed its subscribers will be able to access the standard HBO Go app on the Xbox 360 starting "early next week." The only bad news? There's still no news on when / if those Comcast logins will ever give HBO Go streaming access through other connected TV platforms like Samsung's Smart TV apps or the Roku box, and Time Warner cable customers are still on the outside looking in altogether. That's the business for now, Comcast customers can check out the app's video preview after the break to see what they've been missing

One of the EVO 4G LTE's most important features may be one you hate the most

HTC EVO 4G LTE

I worry about my HTC One X. I live in fear that I will render its camera -- one of the more important parts of the phone -- useless by scratching the camera lens to no end. On the One X, which is made up of just a single piece of polycarbonate, there's no easy way to replace the lens cover. That's not the case with the EVO 4G LTE. The lens cover is a part of the removable cover.

And that's a bit ironic, don'tcha think? The part that is the subject of much controversy (some folks are little upset over the design) could well be the phone's savoir. The camera on the HTC One series -- as well as the HTC EVO 4G LTE -- is one of its most important features. If you're looking for another way the E4GLTE might best the excellent HTC One X, here it is.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel's patents to protect against litigation trolls

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google's $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn't mean that Google will automatically win Nortel's massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google's relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel's portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It's worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents -- which are nearly all telecoms-related -- will be used to defend against Oracle's attacks on Android's use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.

O'Reilly helps Japan, offers entire e-book catalog for 50% off, today only

O'reilly make some of the best computer books in the world. They also sell them as DRM-free e-books in a bunch of formats, including PDFs and Mobi for Kindle.

They usually offer one "Deal of the Day", which is a 50% discount code for a book chosen for that one day. But just for for today, they've created a discount code -- DDJPN -- that gives you a 50% discount on their entire catalog, and they give a part of the proceeds to aid Japan relief efforts.

So far they've raised over $60,000, and the day is still young. So if you've been recently hankering after some nerdy book (or three), now would be a great time to grab one.
