Tango Takes $42 Million VC Round To The Bank And Its Mobile Video Calling To The PC

Mobile video calling app Tango is taking off, recently passing 17 million registered users in half the time it took Skype. It got that far with about $14 million in venture capital. Today, Tango announced that it just raised another $42 million in a series B financing led by Draper Fisher Jurvetson, the same VC firm that first invested in Skype. Angel investor Len Blavatnik and Alex Zubillaga also participated. So far, Tango has been a mobile-only product, allowing people on both Androids and iPhones to conduct video chats with each other. With the proliferation of video cameras in smartphones, the service is taking off. The company will now take the fight to Skype's home turf, the PC. A Windows PC version will launch by the end of the summer, allowing Tango video calls to take place between iPhones, Windows PCs, Android phones, and iPads.

IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop's battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top -- though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn't necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11's case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we'd really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test...

Roku?s New Set-Top Box Now Available With Angry Birds

If your favorite thing about the latest Apple TV is its size, you'll love the Roku 2. The already dinky little box has shrunk. At 3 inches on each side, it is smaller than the Apple TV and shorter than a pack of cigarettes (both 3.5 inches). More importantly, the Roku now plays games.

Sprint's Dan Hesse: significant 4G plans to be announced this fall

We're here at Sprint's monolithic campus in Overland Park, and part of our day was spent speaking directly with CEO Dan Hesse. Amongst other things, the bigwig confessed that it had been awhile since his company (or Clearwire) had launched a 4G market. While Verizon Wireless has been pushing out LTE to new cities on what feels like a fortnightly basis, there's been nary a WiMAX deployment in the US during 2011. But that, friends, is gearing up to change. According to Hesse: "We're going to come out with a great story this fall around 4G, and it'll all become clear." He seemed curiously excited about whatever's around the bend, and Sprint's VP of Product Development, Fared Adib, seemed similarly giddy about the impending unveiling. Neither of 'em would crack on what markets would be addressed or what tactics would be used to match rivals in terms of 4G reach, but whatever the case, we're guessing Sprint users will be a lot happier with their service once they get through the summertime blues.

Oh, and it's worth mentioning that Sprint's "not exclusive to WiMAX, nor the Clearwire relationship." Not a soul on the campus would talk details surrounding that rumored LightSquared investment, but judging by the smiles, it's at least on the table.
