Amazon Kindle 3G ? The Perfect Travel Companion

So I’m sitting on the Reunification Express on my way to Hue from Hanoi in Vietnam. It’s a 13 hour trip and I need something to while away the time.  This is the third overseas trip I’ve done with my Kindle and figured why not write a quick review of how useful the Amazon Kindle [...]

Two Key Features Of Facebook Music: Scrobbling And Track Unification

Screen Shot 2011-09-10 at 12.11.01 PMYesterday, we outlined a bit of what we've heard about Facebook's upcoming f8 conference. One big launch will be their official foray into music. Today, we've heard more about that launch. One thing we've heard from a very good source is that a key aspect of the service will be "scrobbling". The term, made popular by Last.fm, means that when you listen to a song, it gets sent to your profile without you have to do anything. I assume there will be a way to turn this off, or a way for you to selectively share songs, but this is a key to the service.

Ecko Zip earbuds pump tunes through a functioning zipper, let you drop your fly in public

We already knew that New Jersey was a hotbed for personal audio innovation, so it certainly came as no surprise when the Garden State's ECKOUNLTD (Ecko Unlimited, with a hint of Jersey Shore) hit us up with a slew of new stylz. We're most curious about the new Zip 'buds, which replace the traditional cord with a functioning zipper, presumably to keep that ever-so-prevalent tangling issue from crampin' your style. These in-ear beauts will set you back just 30 beans -- or about a half-dozen servings of Ron Ron Juice. Other offerings include the $13 Zone earbuds, $15 Chaos II (that Chaos I was off the hook), the $20 Stomp, $25 Lace (which include a shoelace-inspired cord), and the $40 Chain, which, as you probably guessed, features a beaded dog-tag chain cord. At those prices we wouldn't expect stellar acoustics, but if you're rockin' out to any of these budz, you're probably most concerned with lookin' good. And nothing says six-pack like zippers and chains.

Update: As it turns out, the zip 'buds concept was in fact not born in New Jersey, but rather in Carlsbad, CA about a year ago. Those appropriately named Zipbuds are still currently in line for a patent, hence the copycat 'buds above. Hit up the coverage link below to see the original version.

The Completely Capable, Decidedly Deadly Women of World War 2 [Photography]

In World War 2's European theater, women were often as brutal a soldier as their better-known male counterparts, if not more. This was especially so in the war-torn Soviet Union, Poland and within the notorious German S.S. More »

Now showing: Netflix 1.4 brings playback to 'all Android 2.2 and 2.3 devices'

You heard right, film aficionados -- Netflix has just updated its Android app in order to bring one major, major change: "expanded support for phones." Previously, the app only worked on a smattering of smartphones, but as of today, v1.4 brings playback to "all Android 2.2 and 2.3 devices." Congratulations -- your weekend just got a lot better. Hit the source link to get your download on, or just visit the Market for an update if you're already in the door. So much for those "hardware DRM requirements" we heard about at MWC, huh?

Psst... all is well at Engadget US, but our colleagues in Canada aren't seeing the update yet.

Update: Seems T-Mobile's G2x is left out of the "all." Anyone else having issues with a particular handset?

[Thanks, 3vil and Brett]

Smozzy dodges T-Mobile data plans, delivers mobile web over text

Paying for your mobile internet data can be such a drag on the wallet. Luckily, there are Android apps like Smozzy that'll get you away from the pricey tiers, and onto the information superhighway via text -- no data plan required. You'll have to be a member of the Magenta brigade to use it, and you'll need an unlimited messaging plan, but after that, it should be smooth sailing and a little bit of extra wait time. So far, the well-reviewed app is still wearing its beta tag, and has only been tested on the Nexus S and T-Mobile G2. But don't let a little wireless experimentation stop you from enjoying the loophole-exploiting internet access. Something tells us this workaround might not be available for long. Hit up the source link below to test drive the SMS'd net for yourself.
