An Affordable Computer for Kids from Kid Computers

My daughter recently spilled water on her computer and killed it.  She was devastated because she didn’t know how she could do her schoolwork without a computer.  Luckily, hers was repairable, but we could have been facing a considerable expense if we had to replace it.  Kid Computers understand how important computers are to education, [...]

Micro Four Thirds Canon Lens Adapter Allows Aperture Control

One thing I love about Micro Four Thirds cameras is that you can mount all kinds of lenses on them using simple, cheap adapters. In fact, I’m just about to sell my Nikon D700 because I almost never use it, but I’m keeping my lenses to use on a Panasonic GF1. But until now, Canon users [...]

First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced

Firefox 5, 6, 7 and release channels
Mozilla's Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto, has detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and 7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three months after the release of Firefox 4.

Along with the faster 6-week release cadence, Firefox's new Chrome-like release channels have also been given names and anticipated update frequencies. The most notable change is the introduction of a new alpha channel -- which is analogous to Chrome Canary -- that will be called 'aurora' and will update nightly. Aurora will be where fixes and features are tested, and either approved for Beta, or backed out to Central. Aurora will have a new icon, too.

The Nightly (mozilla-central) channel will remain unchanged in name and frequency, but it will gain a new 'nightly icon.' The Beta (mozilla-beta) channel will remain as-is, with new builds rolling out weekly. The Release (mozilla-release) channel will also remain as-is, with security and stability updates coming every 6 to 12 weeks.

It should be noted that the names (including 'aurora') are not necessarily final, but it's unlikely that they'll change. We're also awaiting the arrival of the new 'channel switching' technology, which should arrive in the next few days -- in time for the release of Firefox 6 aurora!

Dodge is a space-shooter in which you have no weapons

dodge
Space-shooters are usually a fairly fiery affair, with many types of guns, weapon upgrades, power-ups and more. Dodge does away with all of that, while keeping the very essence of a space shooter: Dark background, fast action, and stuff blowing up all over the place.

Your vector-looking spacecraft is the fastest thing on the screen, most of the time. And as the header implies, you have absolutely no weapons; you can't get any, either. All you have is agility and maneuverability.

Your opponents shoot heat-seeking missiles at you; the missiles lock on and start tracking you. The trick is to dodge the missiles while putting them in the path of one of your enemies, thus letting them have a taste of their own medicine.

There are three types of enemies, at least in the first few levels: "simple" spaceships which fire slow projectiles, "tanks" which seem to be more serious and take more hits to destroy, and "circles." The circles simply explode, spewing twenty or thirty very fast projectiles. This sounds dangerous, but is actually great once you learn to use them; they are very destructive for tanks, and can even blow up other circles.

The soundtrack is very techno, but it meshes very well with this type of game. Intense fun!

Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps

personalactivitymonitor
Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It's free and bare-bones -- all it does is track what applications you're using and for how long.

A big drawback at this point is that it doesn't integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn't require constant Web app use, knowing how long you've used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time.

This is far from the only application in this space -- alternatives such as Slife and Chrometa are full-featured and impressive -- but PAM is good option for those who want a nice, simple tracker.

Android Quick App: Intimity - For the ladies

Any woman can tell you, tracking your monthly cycle is not the most fun thing ever. Trying to plan around it can be a real pain, and let's just be honest, it's really not the easiest thing to stay on top of. We have enough going on in our daily lives without having to stop and try to calculate if today is an especially good day to get pregnant or if that spontaneous weekend trip is going to be hindered by mother nature. Intimity is a new app aimed to make it all effortless, so that with a glance at your screen, you can tell what your body is planning for you.

Getting started is pretty simple. Simply input a few dates and indicate if you are trying to get pregnant or not, and the app does the rest for you. The main screen shows the current date, the day of your cycle you're on, and if it's a fertile, not fertile, or ovulation day. It was funny to me that the picture of the girl changes depending on those circumstances; if you're not trying to conceive, on fertile days she's dressed very prim and proper, and on non-fertile days she's ready to party - and vice versa if you are trying to conceive. Options at the bottom of this screen take you to view a monthly calendar that is in the shape of a flower with many petals. Spin the flower to choose a date, and you can enter notes, weight, mood and other details. You can even view statistics about your cycles and be notified when it's time to take birth control.

All in all Intimity is a handy app that takes much of the guess work out of at least this aspect of being a woman. Whether you're trying to get pregnant, or trying NOT to get pregnant, this app can be a great tool to use. You can grab it in the Android Market for $1.35. Download links and screenshots are after the break!
