New software uses facial recognition to defend against prying eyes

Having the right programs and hardware to keep the information on your display safe from prying eyes is never a bad idea, and new software from Oculis Labs offers a very interesting take on how to do just that. It's called PrivateEye, and it utilizes facial recognition to automatically pixelate the contents of your display when you look away.

If you step away from your system and someone else decides to sit down and poke around, PrivateEye will present a confusing jumble of garbled text. It'll even notify you if someone tries to peek over your shoulder -- and display a picture of your peeping Tom, throw up an alert, or sound an alarm.

Check out the video embed after the break, and share your thoughts in the comments!

Brightkite Winds Down, Says It Will Come Back With ?Something Better? (Again)

BrightkiteRemember Brightkite? Launched with the help of TechStars back in August 2007, the location-based 'check-in' service once rivaled the likes of Foursquare and Gowalla, but never really got the traction it needed to keep on competing and win the day: the startup killed the check-in functionality about a year ago to focus on group texting. It's been quiet about Brightkite ever since, and the company's two founders moved on long before the pivot to group texting was announced, starting a new venture dubbed Forkly (our review). Now, a reader tells us, it appears Brightkite (which remained the name even after their 2009 merger with Limbo) is changing course again.

ELAGO Nano Mobile Micro SD Reader Review

When you purchase a netbook or a MacBook Air, you want a lightweight, compact computer that you can carry in a small bag or even your normal purse/gear bag.  A limitation that some netbooks, especially older ones, and some MacBook Airs have in common is low amounts of data storage.  You can connect an external [...]

LG's Magic Remote enables voice control for its smart TVs

LG was quick to introduce Wii-style motion controls and pointing to its smart TV controllers, but its new Magic Remote also adds voice recognition, allowing you to enter search terms without ever contemplating the alphabet. In a radical move, it also conjures up a scroll wheel -- perhaps for no reason other than to spite Samsung's now dowdy-looking QWERTY rival. The fact that it can control your LG Cinema 3D TV without forcing you to star-jump is a happy bonus. There's a full PR after the break, although no sign yet of availability or pricing.

Google offers updates for Google this holiday season, fruitcake en route

If Google's idea of a stocking stuffer is tweaking Google+, its engineers are getting the gift-giving over with a few days early. Today, the company announced that it'll be introducing a few new features to its social network, including new controls that adjust how posts from a given circle are blended into the overall stream of posts, along with which posts are highlighted for your attention. The outfit also says it's working on refining its toolbar to highlight newer posts and see how widely your posts have been shared. For advertisers, up to 50 named managers can now administrate a Google+ Page, and a fix to the photo side of the site allow for improved navigation and better tagging. Head past the break to see full clips of the changes in action, and since Google bought out Santa's operation, expect to hear Eric Schmidt's footsteps on your roof come the 24th.

Update: The Google+ Android app has also seen an update tonight, gaining the ability to start a hangout from a Messenger conversation, new photo album design and more. Hit the Android Market for more details.

This Canon Powershot S95 Is Your Pointy-Shooter Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

In one corner, the brand spanking beautiful Canon S100. 12-megapixel CMOS sensor. GPS. Thumb grip. And so much more between its pocketable frame it'll scare a smartphone camera sideways. In the other corner! The tried and true Canon Powershot S95. 10-megapixel CCD sensor. No GPS. No half assed thumb grip. The fight? Which camera you should buy. Obviously the S100 is a technically superior cam, I won't dispute that but for two hunnid dollaz less you can score yourself a S95. It's true, the Canon Powershot S95 is only $229 right now. Do you know what 200 dollars can get you? 200 different things on a McDonald's dollar menu. That's enough food for winter. Or it can land you an Xbox 360. Or a paid model to photograph. Or enough booze and drugs to throw a party to document. Or a nice pair of pants to take off before your dong shots. Or an iPhone 4S to have so you won't ever need a point and shoot cam again. Oh wait? -CC More »

Add a Windows 8 user tile to your Windows 7 taskbar

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it's only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they've spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there's a user tile displayed. If you'd like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.
